From The Shadows Of Buffalo’s Sentinels

For many years every spring and summer, I would venture to Buffalo, NY, as part of Mark Maio’s Silo City Workshop and photography abandoned grain silos.  That doesn’t sound very appealing, but if you like abandoned rusty and decaying things, you would think you went to heaven.  On many of these trips, I went with Michael Reichmann, who many of you will remember from the Luminous-Landscape website days.

We would climb stairs and ladders and crawl through nasty places to get amazing photographs of these grain silos.  Buffalo, NY, was home to grain silos back in the day as a middle step for unloading shipped of grain and then reloading the grain onto rail cars to be shipped to numerous locations on the east coast.

Over these many years and with thousands of pictures taken by hundreds of photographers, Mark Maio set out to make a coffee table book.  This book features one photograph from all the photographers who had photographed there.  I had one of mine published.  There are some beautiful images that are part of this book.  If you are a collector of books like me, then you should definitely have this book on your coffee table.  Information for ordering this beautiful book is below.

Looking at this book brings back some of the most special days of being able to photograph a landmark like the grain silos that are now in the hands of developers and will like many things slip off to become a memory.  This book helps preserve that memory.

The Silo City Photography Workshop has ended after tens of years due to the sale and development of the site. In commemoration of the workshop and the wonderful photography created over the years, I decided to publish a limited-edition book. Each of the over 300 photographers who attended the workshop was invited to submit a maximum of three images. Only one image each from sixty of those photographers are included in the book.

Photography is my passion and has been for 45 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of pictures taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through Rockhopper Workshops and other projects as well as teaching at my Gallery in Indianapolis.
