What others are saying:

William Neill is one of America’s leading fine art landscape photographers. I personally find his work to be some of the most compelling that I have seen. His 1997 book Landscapes of the Spirit is an important and beautiful work, but unfortunately has been out of print for years.”

Like many photographers I enjoy viewing and learning from the work of others. About 10 years ago I came across Bill Neill’s Landscapes of the Spirit, and knew that I had found the work of a kindred spirit… Over the years since I have frequently recommended this book to students and other photographers looking for inspiration.

 – Michael H. Reichmann, The Luminous Landscape

A Great e-Book… This is really a bargain for seeing some wonderful nature photography that will inspire you both in terms of the photography and Bill’s sensitivity to the natural world
 – Rob Sheppard, Editor at Large Outdoor Photographer Magazine

It’s pure inspiration.”
– John Paul Caponigro

This book is a feast for your eyes.”
 –Uwe Steinmueller, Digital Outback Photo

This Digital Edition is the resurrection of my favorite book,Landscapes of the Spirit,in digital form. It has been out of print for many years. When the original book was produced, I had the pleasure of having full artistic control over the selection of photographs and text, and therefore I feel that it is the strongest creative statement of my work available. When the book was published in 1997, there were few books being published where the artist had control of the digital files used for reproduction. Today, I have much greater control over the photographs for Landscapes of the Spirit – Digital Edition. High resolution scans have been made of all images, and master Photoshop files created that bring out their full potential.

From the original book file, I added the upgraded image files to the Adobe InDesign master file and created a PDF that contains the complete book, text and images intact. The final result is that I have the same book I love now available for download. The quality of the images really comes to life on screen. I realize that this isn’t the same tactile experience of holding a book in hand, but it is hard to dismiss the vivid quality one can enjoy on screen.

Landscapes of the Spirit – Digital Editionis delivered as two PDF files. One PDF contains single pages, and so is optimized for viewing the individual images, as well as for reading text. The second PDF shows the two-page spreads, allowing you to enjoy the book as it was originally designed. The ebook also offers interaction between each image and the Photo Notes section at the back of the book. Click on an image, and you are taken to the PDF page where the Photo Notes are for that photograph. When viewing the Photographic Notes, simply click on the photograph’s title, and you are linked back to that image in the PDF.

The file sizes of my PDFs have been optimized to preserve the high quality images files, but they don’t take any more time to download than an album from iTunes!

Thoughts about Impressions of Light:

“My goal is to remove context within a landscape, distilling down to its essence, in order to convey the energy of a subject or scene in a fresh way, much as snow simplifies the land.

For me, these images deflect the mind’s tendency to dwell on the concrete issues of place and name when viewing a subject. The spirit of a place or an object can be more strongly conveyed.”

I am happy to offer my ebook, Impressions of Light, in digital form. I have been working on this series since 2005, and it is rewarding to have finally produced a portfolio of my favorite images. The book was designed in Adobe InDesign with file sizes that have been optimized to preserve the high resolution images files. The quality of the images really comes to life on screen. I know that this isn’t the same tactile experience of holding a book in hand, but it’s hard to dismiss the vivid quality one can enjoy on screen.

What others are saying:
Meditations in Monochrome” is another welcome work from one of the country’s preeminent landscape photographers, William Neill. The images range from macro to large landscapes, each one evocative and crafted by a master photographer.”
 –Tony Sweet

“Bill is a friend and a superb landscape photographer. He has long been known for his wonderful and thoughtful color nature photography. He takes a journey into classic black-and-white nature photography with his new e-book, Meditations in Monochrome. Yet this is not a retro, back-to-Ansel sort of photography. Meditations in Monochrome truly does offer a new look at nature through Bill’s discerning eye now turned to black-and-white. This is a beautiful book to go through and use for your own meditations on nature.”
– Rob Sheppard – Photodigitary

Bill Neill has explored B&W as a way of expanding his creative vision. He’s no novice to monochromes, either – his essay in the e-book explains it all, and the pictures are exquisite! The light is absolutely luminous in many pictures. Bill’s monochromes prove that, under all the seduction that color provides in a picture, there still has to be strong composition, design and contrast for an image to work.
– Brenda Tharp

“…Meditations in Monochromewas a very pleasant surprise for me. Not only does Neill carry over his excellent composition skills but his processing and presentation, …are simply superb. Equally surprising to me was the experience of appreciating fine photography in an ebook format…The ebook images are of very high resolution and quality and, when expanded to fill a high quality screen, look very impressive …It is fascinating to see how some of these images are not only converted but transformed when presented in monochrome, taking on a completely different mood.”
– Guy Tal

I am happy to offer you my ebook,Meditations in Monochrome, in digital form. Although the great Black and White masters, like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston for 35 years, have inspired me, I have pursued color landscape photography with a passion since college. However, with the use of Photoshop conversions to BW from the digital scanning of 4×5 film as well as digital capture, I am revisiting the roots of my photographic inspiration.

This ebook includes an essay where I write about my early study of Black and White, my favorite BW masters, my job at The Ansel Adams Gallery, and the techniques I use for my conversions. I selected 52 photographs for this digital portfolio, ranging from classic western landscapes to intimate details of nature. Locations include the coast of New England, the deserts of the Southwest and my backyard in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The selection covers a wide span of my career, with photographs dating from 1982 to many recent digital captures created as recently as 2008.

The book was designed in Adobe InDesign with file sizes that have been optimized to preserve the high-resolution images files. The quality of the images comes to life on our modern computer monitors. I know that this isn’t the same tactile experience of holding a book in hand, but it’s hard to dismiss the vivid quality one can enjoy on screen.

Meditations in Monochrome – Digital Editionis delivered as a PDF file. The book can be viewed one image at a time so you can enjoy the full impact of the photograph. You can also set Adobe Reader to view a book style presentation, seeing the pairings I have created.
