A 10-DAY EXPEDITION FROM NORTHEAST GREENLAND
ON THE EXPEDITION SHIP OCEAN NOVA
With Art Wolfe, Kevin Raber and Steve Gosling

This Workshop Has Only 8 Spots Left

Art Wolfe of Art Wolfe Photography along with Steve Gosling and Kevin Raber of Luminous-Landscape join forces to host a workshop to the East Coast of Greenland September 2nd to September 11, 2019.  Our team will lead you on a  trip to some of the most amazing places along the East Coast of Greenland. This is a photographers dream trip come true.

Our goal is to make sure you have an unforgettable experience.  We will be there to help you maximize your photographic potential.  As instructors, we will make presentations during our cruising time and then be there with you on Zodiac cruises and landings.  We’ll help you see things differently and answer any technical questions you may have.  Since this a ship cruise we will be together the whole time.  Learning and sharing never stop as we have time to share in the observation lounge and during meals.  We will have numerous presentation not only on the region we are visiting but also on photo techniques that will surely inspire you. Plus, we will be doing this as a small group of 30 photographers and we can spend one on one with you to help show you how to maximize your Arctic images.

As a photographic cruise, we will be working to make sure we visit locations at the best times for ideal light.  Don’t be surprised if you are shooting from dawn to sunset. And, there won’t be long nights.

An expedition cruise to Northeast Greenland – one of the last unspoiled wildernesses in the world. The grandiose landscape is dominated by glaciers and beautifully shaped icebergs. Most of the year this ice-choked coast is inaccessible and it is only in late summer, when the tundra is clad in autumn colors, that we have a chance to get here.

This will be our route of travel as described below

On this exciting Arctic expedition, we venture into one of the largest remaining wilderness areas in the Northern Hemisphere, where large areas are virtually untouched by man. Northeast Greenland National Park, covering an area over of over 972,000 square kilometers, is the world’s largest national park.

Our group will be 27 photographers/attendees and the three of us instructors.  You’ll have plenty of time for one on one help and you’ll have an instructor in your zodiac.  This is a unique learninge xpereince to ahve access to three wel know instructors.  Our goal is to make sure you get the most out of this wonderful photographic trip.  Oh, spouses are welcome and we are sure they will enjoy this incredible location as much as you will.

Rock formations like you have never seen before and glaciers everywhere.

The expedition starts in Reykjavik, Iceland.  You’ll fly from Reykjavik to Constable Point to board the Ocean Nova and begin your expedition. The Ocean Nova is one of my favorite ships. I have been on this ship dozens of times.  I was even married by the Captain of the ship on one my Antarctica trips.  You’ll find no better vessel for this type of trip than the Ocean Nova.  See my video guided tour of the ship below.

Once we land at Constable Point, we get right into Expedition Mode.  After a short safety briefing and a chance to get settled into your cabin, we will lift anchor and start cruising. From this point on the photo opportunities will come at us fast.

The Immensity Of Greenland

Icebergs take on magical looks by Kevin Raber

The video below was made by Chris Sanderson and I feel describes how I felt about Greenland.  Everything is big.  Greenland is one of my most favorite places to visit.  It’s a dynamic landscape.  There is not a cliche to be found.  From the immense landscape to the intricate close-up details of an iceberg, Greenland will not disappoint you.  I hope you enjoy this video and that you give great consideration to joining Art, Steve and myself for what will be an amazing photographic adventure.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

Embracing the unexpected is part of the legacy—and excitement—of expedition travel. When traveling in extremely remote regions, your expedition staff must allow the sea, the ice and the weather to guide route and itinerary details. This itinerary is a tentative outline of what you’ll experience on this voyage; please be aware that no specific itinerary can be guaranteed.

Kevin Gives A Tour Of The Ocean Nova

A different perspective awaits you as you board the Ocean Nova. The smallest and most nimble ship in Quark Expeditions®’ fleet, she is best known for her informal atmosphere and home-like comfort. An ice-strengthened hull makes it Arctic-ready, while a clean Scandinavian style permeates the interior. All cabins have exterior views, private facilities, and ample storage, with dedicated twin and triple cabins.

A spacious, glassed-in observation lounge lets you connect to the magnificent Arctic landscape, and enjoy presentations and briefings by on-board specialists and your Expedition Leader. An open-bridge policy puts you in the driver’s seat.

Below is a video I made in Greenland for an upcoming Antarctica trip.  Regardless it is a nice tour of the Ocean Nova so you can a feel for this fine ship. I mention a rocking ship due to seas in this video.  we will be in sheltered water except for a short ocean crossing for the Greenland trip, so no worries when it comes to uncomfortable seas.

What To Wear

Prior to the trip, we will go into more detail about what clothing is needed.  We will also help you with deciding what photo gear to bring and what to expect.  In the meantime I made the video below that may help you get started on what to wear.

Each Attendee will receive an L.Type Portfolio Box with 2o images of their choice.  Certificates for these will be presented on the trip with complete details.

Kevin Raber

kwr 1 w beard icelandI see the world through the lens and a frame. Photography for me is an extension of who I am. I have gone through many stages in my career. At one time I was a portrait photographer with many prestigious clients. Over time I grew restless for something else in the field. I truly enjoy my current work as a fine art landscape photographer. There is something special about examining and photographing everything from grand scenes in nature that are there for a moment and then gone to industrial landscapes and focusing on the incredibly minute details of peeling paint and rust. I am most fortunate to be able to travel to many wonderful places.

I have fond memories of nights and weekends spent in the darkroom creating prints. The stereo blasting. It could be fun and it could be tedious. You didn’t always know what you were going to get and, at times, it required extensive hands-on darkroom manipulation. I can still smell the chemicals. I was taught by masters of the darkroom.

Today, that has all changed thanks to the advent of computers, digital cameras and Photoshop. The darkroom is the computer. Some things are still unpredictable, but the tools to achieve the final result allow you to see them immediately on the screen in real time and right in front of you. Digital allows you to capture a range of tonalities and exposures that were impossible with film. Variables such as emulsion, temperature, chemistry, and exposure are taken out of the equation. What you see on your computer monitor is what you will get when printed.  One thing that hasn’t changed is the music. It goes along with creating and working on images. Thank God for iTunes.

I embraced digital early on. It continues to evolve and provide flexibility to all who embrace it. The digital age is still young and has completely transformed our industry. Never before has a switch from analog to digital been so prevalent as in photography. I’m looking forward to seeing where the next ten years takes us.

My career in photography has evolved since 1972 when I first began making a living with photography. Today I am also CEO of the Luminous-Landscape.com, one of the most visited and prestigious websites for the photographers on the internet, with over 1.5 million visitors a month.  I lead photography workshops to edge of the planet locations as well provide instructional videos to photographers on how to improve their craft.

There doesn’t seem to be anything that can dampen my passion and enthusiasm for photography. It has opened doors to the world for me and I am most grateful I can share my experiences with others.
