Form And Function

What is it with being a photographer? We lust after camera gear, we want the latest accessories and many of us are always looking for the ultimate camera storage and transport system.

I am in the midst of moving to a new home and I have a pile of camera backpacks and rolling bags that could fill a garage. Kind of crazy, isn’t it? I have tried a ton of bags and while many are good, none have excelled.

However, for the last year and a half, I have been using the Tamrac Anvil 27 backpack and I think I have finally found a pack that works for me.

As many of you know, I travel a lot. I need a camera bag that right away will feel comfortable on my old and aging back. It should also be able to accommodate the variety of gear that I travel with. Many times I will be using a Sony system but just as often I travel with Fuji and Olympus.

Michael Durr, Video Producer for Luminous-Landscape, takes us for a quick review of this bag, explaining why we like it so much and what things we wish were a bit different. Also, check out the introductory drone footage, which we had some fun with! Drone footage courtesy of Paul Nurkkala.

Lately, I have tried a number of bags from other manufacturers. Some of these newer bags simply don’t work for me. They are over-engineered and in many cases uncomfortable to wear for extended periods. I don’t like straps that hurt and cut into my shoulders and chest. I like simple click-and-snap connectors like those of the Tamrac Anvil.

For a while, I used the F-stop bag with numerous camera inserts. The F-Stop bag is comfortable but it was either too big or too much a hassle to get things in and out of. For the kind of photography, I am doing these days, I find I can carry everything in the Anvil 27 bag that I need for a week or so in the field.

If you think this bag is too big then you may want to check out some of the other Tamrac bags that are similar but smaller.

We have been using this bag for over a year; both Michael and I use it and we really have come to like it. Check it out. It just works.
