A freediver swims through a tannic layer of water over a submerged spring in the Santa Fe River in north Florida. Leaves and other organic matter in the flood plane stain the water like tea. During the dry season, the water in the river is often almost entirely clear and spring-fed, but when the river is high, it creates a fire-like effect where it mixes with clear, freshwater eminating from the underlying aquifer.

Jennifer Adler is a conservationist, diver and underwater photojournalist based in Gainesville, Florida. She works with National Geographic, the Nature Conservancy and many other organizations to amplify the work of scientists and researchers that work in the water. She’s also a big advocate of Florida’s fresh water springs and it’s this environment that we explored on out shoot. Jenny took me out to Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park on the Santa Fe river, a short drive from Gainesville, where we snorkelled through incredible crystal clear waters. It was November, when the weather was colder and the springs were empty. This was my first time shooting video beneath the surface, the first time in a wetsuit (which I put on backwards!) and was a remarkable experience and I’m very happy with the results.

Please enjoy! Stay tuned for follow-up videos where we explore Jennifer’s life as a freelancer as well as some of her favourite assignments.
