Lula Show & Tell - September: Reflections (Part 1 of 2)

A reflection doubles a scene and changes it at the same time. This month you sent us reflections in mud puddles, marble buildings, rear view mirrors, and the world’s largest reflecting pool in Bordeaux. Peter Dulis’s shot of Vestrahorn in Iceland, our lead this week, is beautiful. Thank you all who shared!

We had so much to share that we split it into two parts. This is Part 1.

Vestrahorn is a 454-meter gabbro mountain on Iceland’s Stokksnes Peninsula, known for its jagged peaks and black sand beaches, and it has appeared in films like Game of Thrones and The Witcher. Incredible place to visit.

Dive Boat dockside at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences. I was hanging over the edge of the dock to find the angle needed for a mirror’s reflection; the underworld of the reflection, darker and faintly wavering, seemed more natural topside, as though acknowledging the flaws of reality which disperse in our purged, polished, and perfected memory of events.

Photo 1. Shot at Twin Dolphin Marina in Bradenton, Florida, USA. A foggy morning that otherwise makes a straight documentary photo look dreamy. And my strong horizontal crop simplifies the clutter and draws the viewer’s eyes in with a “leading lines” effect.
Photo 2. Shot at my summer home in Northwestern New Jersey, USA. Our lake community’s iconic island willow tree is wholly reflected in the lake on a foggy morning, giving a double image of the willow, while the maples framing it are all in the foreground; not part of the reflection.

Photo #1: West Coast Inspiration: This is a reflection of part of a boat in the water off the west coast. The yellow is from the kayaks on board. I am struck by how much this reminds me of the artwork of West Coast First Nations artists: shapes within shapes, maybe even claws on the left and a beak near the top? I like to think that perhaps a millenium ago, an aspiring Haida artist was sitting by the bay, and on seeing a reflection like this, thought, “Hmmm… I could work with this!”

Living in Knysna, a small town (pop 80 000) in the Western Cape, South Africa, there are many opportunities for keen photographers. On Waterfront Drive was shot across a flooded lot after about 600 ml of rain fell during a storm that wreaked havoc with our town. Many trees were toppled by the gale force winds and many open areas were flooded. Abstract was shot in the small boat harbour and is a partial reflection of a catamaran ready for delivery to the Caribbean. Knysna is well known for its catamaran manufacturing and most craft are delivered to the US or Caribbean.

Nothing abstract here, though it still confounds the mind. In Death Valley, December 2023, after that particular year’s record-breaking rainfall, the ancient lake in Badwater Basin was massive. The crystal saline lake bottom is visible through the shallow water reflection of the Panamint Range. Any confusion I had about the “yacht club” I had heard of in near-by Shoshone was erased.

A submission for the Reflection S & T. This is a thirty second exposure using ND filters on Hoi An Beach Vietnam, during, at this time of the year, a very characteristic hazy sunrise. Taken March 2019. In the foreground is a Vietnamese ‘basket boat’ or coracle
and oars – with the sunrise reflecting off the virtually still ocean. The trio of figures walked into the frame and then out again during the exposure. Their translucency also reflects the insubstantiality of the whole scene, nothing seizes the viewer’s attention -rather it engenders another kind of inner reflection.

My Submission for the theme Reflections. Photographed at Keoladeo National Park, on a fog‑laden February morning. The sunrise was slow and lazy, the air heavy and unusually cold. The birds waited still for the warmth of the sun before beginning their day — and that moment of complete stillness created these perfect reflections.

Two reflection images. Our bald cypress trees lining the Texas Hill Country have leaves that can turn a bright red/orange in the Fall. I waded into one of our river banks along the Guadalupe River on this conservation easement and captured their beauty. There is a 100 acre Nature Center in our town with a creek on it (Cibilo Creek) and one foggy morning, I captured this spooky reflection which I love.
