Medium format is the buzz word these days. It wasn’t long ago when many were saying medium format was dead. Funny how things change. Phase One with the release of the XF camera got a lot of attention. It is one of the best and finest cameras I have ever used. Just about all the media and content providers also agree. The XF with its features set the bar high for others.

There are some new entries into the medium format market. It’s interesting to read and hear the comments from new users as well as reviewers on their surprise regarding image quality with the 50 MP sensors. Now imagine doubling that resolution and think of the image quality that can be achieved. As I wrote in my earlier reviews of the XF, the only way to really appreciate the image quality is to make a print where the image can truly be evaluated. I found with the XF that even the resolution of the best monitors can’t reveal the true detail of what the XF 100MP file printed at 300 ppi or 360 ppi can.

Over the last year Phase One has released two updates for the XF increasing its feature set even further. Drew Altdoerffer, product manager for Phase One was recently at the Luminous-Landscape offices working with me on a Capture One tutorial. I asked him if we could sit down and go over what is new with the Phase One XF camera. The video below explains the new features of the XF camera as well as showing it being used in a couple of shooting situations.

The XF Camera and 100 MP digital back are really something to experience. Visit the Phase One website for a dealer close to you and take a look at this system. The price for the Phase One XF made this camera something unique and suited for those with large budgets and a true need for a high-resolution image. It is amazing though, to appreciate how far we have come in the digital age and to think of what is still possible.

Photography is my passion and has been for 45 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of pictures taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through Rockhopper Workshops and other projects as well as teaching at my Gallery in Indianapolis.
