Marketshare at The Bottom of The World
It's always interesting to do a camera head count when a large group of photographers are gathered. I did this on our recently concluded Antarctic workshop, which had some 60 participants and 7 instructors. This group consisted of people from 10 different countries on four continents.
While by no means a scientific poll, it does tell us something about the current marketplace, represented by a small cross-section of affluent amateurs and pros from across the globe.
Canon 30%
Nikon 19%
Sony 7 series 16%
Fuji 10%
Olympus 10%
Sigma Quattro 6%
Pentax 645z 5%
Phase One 5%
Leica S 3%
This doesn't quite add to 100% because of rounding. Panasonic and Hasselblad were obvious by their absence.
The first thing we see is that Canon and Nikon still hold 50% of the market between them. The rest is fragmented, but with Sony moving ahead significantly. I wouldn't read too much into the rest of the percentages as the absolute number of cameras in the count was sma...
