Diving Into Printing

The Masterfile

As Charlie has explained and will continue to explain through the next three videos he makes use of a Master File.  essentially a Master File is the final TIFF (PSD) file of an image that he has worked on.  After he adjusts a RAW file he outputs to a TIFF file or PSD and then he uses Photoshop to make adjustments.  This next video takes a look at a file he shot with film many years ago and the subsequent multiple changes he has made to over the years.  the point being is that he’s never finished.  Charlie always is looking at the image and wondering what would happen if he did this or that.  He takes us through the various adjustment layers explaining his reasons and techniques to achieve an amazing master file.  Looking at the video and the before and after you’ll find yourself as I did of wanting to go back and visit a few older files and looking at them differently and making some new changes to them.

Workflow

One of the most important things for any of us as photographers is to figure out a workflow that works.  Charlie has had plenty of years to perfect his.   In this video, Charlie points out there is no right or wrong.  His system is simple and you have to admire that.  You’ll be surprised at how easy Charlie keeps things and how he keeps track of all his images.  And, it may surprise you he hardly ever uses keywords.  Charlie also shares his backup plan for all his images.

Charlie mentions a video by George Jardine that explains in quite a bit of detail Lightroom Catalogs.

Printing The Open Heart

We sit with Charlie and work on a photograph of a tree that Charlie and I found during our few days of shooting.  You’ll hear how we discuss what needs to be done and how Charlie executes the ideas and fine-tunes the image.  We’ll get rid of white areas that are distracting and do some toning to the image to make it glow.  Part of this is masking the ground and changing the tonality as well as feathering the mask.  Plus we’ll complete the image using a sharpening plugin.

The Sharpening plugin mentioned in this video can be found at Focus Magic.  Since we shot this video with Charlie FocusMagic has become part of my sharpening workflow.  I highly recommend it.

We have a lot more of Charlie to come, so check back as we continue our Shooting With The Masters.

Photography is my passion and has been for 45 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of pictures taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through Rockhopper Workshops and other projects as well as teaching at my Gallery in Indianapolis.
