Chaos is a big word. It gets applied to everything from a cluttered utility closet to a mile-wide tornado. This month, you sent us both. The range of what came in for June’s Show & Tell theme was remarkable. Almost every interpretation you can imagine. We had so much to share that we split it into two parts. This is Part 1.
Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever. It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.
— Aaron Siskind
The image leading this issue is a tornado. Chuck Derus was near Morton, Texas on June 5, 2025 when an EF2 touched down with 125 mph winds, golf ball sized hail, and heavy rain. “If chaos is defined as the inherent unpredictability in the behavior of a complex natural system such as the atmosphere, this storm met the definition.” He photographed it. This is what he got.
What strikes me looking through all of these is how differently photographers interpret a single word. Some went big and literal. Others found it in a close-up of cyanobacteria, or a fishing harbour at dawn, or a prosthetic leg planted in the sand at Jupiter Beach. The theme gave people permission to look harder. That’s what a good prompt does. Part 2 lands shortly with the rest of the gallery.
Enjoy the issue.

“Who doesn’t love them!”
LuLa: The colors.
Scott Brasted

“A wall of water meters and pipes that should never have been installed like this. Chaos on this order is a nightmare for the next person who has to work on it.”
LuLa: It makes a great photograph.
Christopher Hall

“A sobering reality of our chaotic present.”
Michael Fisk
Green Bluff

“These pumpkins and gourds looked to me as though they were scrambling to leave the patch. Led by the pumpkins of course.”
Karsten Hahn
Soos National Nature Reserve, Czech Republic

“A natural Mandelbrot set. The Kaiserquelle spring in Soos runs at 30 degrees Celsius, rich in iron. A layer of cyanobacteria forms and washes away with the outflowing water, revealing the reddish-brown, iron-rich substrate beneath.”
LuLa: Amazing.
Bob Taylor
Jupiter Dog Beach

“I feel guilty if the weather’s good and I don’t walk down to see the show.” These images are from a single week at Jupiter Dog Beach.”

“That prosthetic leg raises a lot of questions. The fellow with the surf board had the faraway look of anticipation as he carried his board. “Zen on the Rocks” — the fellow at the far end appears to be having a thoughtful moment. Luckily, he never saw me.”
John Manger

“Which way and which one?”
LuLa: Love how they complement each other.
Jayanand Govindaraj
Kasimedu Fishing Habour, Chennai, India

“One of India’s largest fishing harbours. Shot from the harbour looking towards the fish market, which can be chaotic in the mornings when people throng to buy fresh fish as it comes off the deep-sea fishing boats and trawlers.”
LuLa: Wow. You can stare at this one for some time.
Nancy Jacob

“Another Ascension.” Another look in another time. What is or is not? Is there right or wrong? Can Truth be known?
Alan Johnston
Chania Harbour, Crete

Disused winch equipment in a derelict shed, Chania Harbour, Crete. “Accreted chaos.”
Rusty Joerin
Columbia Beach, Vancouver Island

“Brant geese stop to feed at Columbia Beach during spring migration. An eagle flew over and spooked them into a defensive flight.”
LuLa: Flight!
July Show & Tell: Composition
Good or bad. Rule of thirds or rules ignored. A frame that tells the story perfectly, or one that tells it in spite of itself. Composition is the decision underneath every photograph you’ve ever made. Show us yours.
