You may remember Dave Gillespie from our last What’s In The Bag segment. Dave shared with us a brief history of his trusted assortment of cameras, dating back a few decades including pre-digital revolution.

In his unique, affable and wild fashion, Dave now introduces us to the fringes of resurgent commercial film processing and printing, DIY style.

In a landscape of increasing conformity where processing is made easy (some would argue too easy!) and where surprises are fewer and far between, this piece goes to show that photography still has its eccentric outliers who are going against the grain (pun intended). These are people who are carrying forward the mantle of the passionate photographer and crafts person, while honoring some of photography’s ever rarifed techniques.

If nothing else, this is an example of dedication and useful eccentricity, two things which I tend to respect.

Step into the world of the “Secret Darkroom” with Dave and our anonymous subject!

Shot and edited by the ever talented Matthew Bennett. If you’ve yet to be introduced to Matt, here is his recent Leica Q2 review
