Diving Deeper Into Printing

Grays and Greens

I have learned so much shooting and printing with Charlie.  It’s now time to get deeper into printing images from our time photographing in the forest.  Our first image was made when driving home from a day of photographing.  Charlie was driving and spotted a tree and we just had to stop.

During this video we watch Charlie finely tune the image, balancing the highlights of the tree trunk with the green background of other trees.  We go through several iterations fine-tuning the image as we go.  Both Charlie and I usually find this process takes several days but you get to see it in minutes.

It really is quite interesting to see the transformation of the image and learn when it is time to say it’s done.

Printing The Waterfall

Just like we did in the last video, Charlie and I pursue printing a waterfall we found during our day in the forest.  Using a number of different techniques we use Lightroom and Photoshop to balance out highlights and details in the shadows to systematically reach a final print.

Charlie Cramer notes,
“I was thinking that in the waterfall video I show how I brightened the water but kept the background dark by locking down the darker tones in the curve.
This technique still works and no upgrade to Photoshop has invalidated it.”

Photography is my passion and has been for 45 plus years. My career in photography has allowed me to travel the world, meet some of the most interesting people on the planet and see things I could never have dreamed of. My goal is to share the passion of pictures taking through photographs and teaching with as many people as I can hoping it brings them as much joy and happiness as it has me. I do this through Rockhopper Workshops and other projects as well as teaching at my Gallery in Indianapolis.
