A film still with the much-vaunted laurels we all hope for as filmmakers

When coming on board at Lula in 2018, I carried a strange mantel, I was an unknown in the Photography community and the son of one of its preeminent luminaries, my father. The actual narrative is that our family (my mother and I) inherited my father’s passion project – The Luminous Landscape – which was never designed as one while being a viable business and legacy project in need of preservation.

I rarely mentioned my filmmaking or music career because it seemed secondary and perhaps a detractor for new subscribers from the site’s purpose. But, film is an extension of photography in its most apparent dimension, which makes it relevant, especially since I finally made one

Indeed my father, Michael Reichmann, who started this site in 1997 (1999 if you ask some), also had dalliances with film. He began playing with moving pictures when the 4k explosion began, and previous to that was a stills photographer for many years in the 60s.

Needless to say, it seems time to inject a bit of my own film story back into life here at Lula.

“Tenzin”, the feature narrative drama I have been working on for over 12 years, has been finally making its festival run. It has played at various Canadian festivals and picked up an award there for best break-out performance by our lead.

In Tallin, Estonia where the film premiered at POFF, the film was nominated for best new directorial debut. And was just up for best feature(!) at Lucca International Film Festival (apologies to our Italian friends, I got word of the nomination only a few days before it screened)

Next month Tenzin plays in Athens at AIFF, which I will attend.

In November, it hits theaters in Toronto, NYC, LA, Calgary, and other large North American cities and will be broadcast on CBC.

I am open to chatting with any community members about film, which is a monster hybrid of business, magic, technicians going to battle, dreams, and the strange social exercise of replaying life!

So, just reach out.

Here’s a review from an Italian paper to give a feel for the film, and here’s the translation:

“You know, the human mind and demons are the same in the end. “

Reflective, dreamlike, a spiritual journey between reality and imagination.
Michael LeBlanc and Joshua Reichmann direct “Tenzin”, a Canadian film that tells the story of the young Tenzin, (played by Tenzin Kelsang) a Tibetan boy who lives in contrast with the culture and the pain of the death of his older brother by self-immolation in a demonstration of the Tibetan movement in China.
Tenzin Kelsang, in the role of the protagonist, transmits without opening his mouth all the suppression that the boy can experience: society, family, and the loss of his brother.
The actor, whose performance is to be praised, received the award for best revolutionary interpretation during the Canadian premiere at the Canadian Film Festival.
Yes, because “Tenzin” is a revolutionary film, a spiritual journey made up of a few dialogues and the extraordinary music of Colin Stetson.

Tenzin Kelsang in a scene from the film In addition to directing the film, LeBlanc and Reichmann created the script, photography and editing of the film.
In conclusion, the film is an absolutely successful experiment, capable of piercing the screen and reaching out to the audience in the hall. “

Ok, I’ll keep everyone updated on theater dates, and I’ll likely do another piece on my co-director/writer and DOP (Director Of Photography), Michael Leblanc.

Until then!
