The Luminous Landscapeis pleased to announce our final workshop for 2002. Assisting him will beSteve Kossack, well known Southwestern photography guide.Chris Sandersonwill be filming the workshop forThe Video Journal, and will act as an additional photographic resource.

Where And What Is Bosque del Apache?

The name resonates with nature photographers‚Bosque del Apache (Apache Woods). This wildlife reserve in southernNew Mexicois one of the preeminent sites in the USA for photographing migratory birds. When I was last there in December, 2001 there were approximately 53,000Snow Geese, 44,000Ducks, 8,000Sandhill Cranes, and 4Bald Eaglesresident in the Refuge. You can read more about that triphere.

Birds of  a Feather‚ Bosque del Apache

Bosqueis located about a 20 minute drive south of Socorro N.M., which will be our base for 3 of the 4 nights of the workshop. The town of Socorro is a 90 minute drive south of Albuquerque, the closest major airport. It’s on the Rio Grande river and quite close to the Mexican border.

This is an opportunity to hone your long-lens and wildlife photography skills, and to learn advanced methods and tools for doing this type of photography.

White Sands National Monument

 Dawn‚ White Sands

Pentax 67II and 55~100mm f/4.5 zoom. Provia 100F.

A challenging photographic location of glaring white sand and rolling dunes. You’ll experience a sunset and a sunrise there and will have the opportunity to experience and photograph a desolate yet achingly beautiful landscape. All of the specialized techniques for working in this unusual environment will be explored. You can read more aboutWhite Sandshere.

About The Workshop

This is not a workshop for absolute beginners. There will be no instruction per-se, unless requested. But, the workshop leaders will be shooting alongside you at all times. They will provide discussion and assistance on specialized topics such as, for example, the use of split ND filers for contrast control, long lens technique, perspective control, action shooting, wildlife techniques and field craft. Advanced techniques will be constantly discussed, demonstrated and put into practice.

This workshop is about shooting‚ lots of shooting. There will be no classroom sessions, no lectures, no slide shows, and most importantly‚  no unnecessary egos. Participants and group leaders will work closelytogether, sharing their knowledge and experience.

About Equipment, Weather & Extras

Southern New Mexico in early December can be warm and cold‚ usually both on the same day. Typically it may be below freezing before dawn and then T-shirt weather in the afternoon. It is usually very dry.

You can do this shoot with either 35mm, a digital SLR or medium format. What you will want most of all is a long lens‚ at least 400mm. A high speed prime long longs is ideal, but a long zoom will be fine. A stabilized lens such as one of Canon’s IS or Nikon’s VR lenses will be very helpful.

Wide angle lenses will be appropriate for use at White Sands. Of course a sturdy tripod is a must.

Workshop participants will be provided with comprehensive equipment suggestions. Members will also be provided with access to a private Discussion Forum, and the opportunity to have their work exhibited on this site.
